Over the last two years, Fyne Futures, along with a KTP student, have set up their own biodiesel processing plant. Biodiesel is a carbon neutral fuel made from waste vegetable oil in a process known as transesterification. The process is a batch process, with 150 litres of biodiesel being produced per batch. Biodiesel can be used on its own or as a blend with petroleum diesel. The recycling centre has been using biodiesel in all its vehicles since June 2008. Until April this year, the biodiesel was mixed in with petroleum diesel to create a 50/50 blend. However a biodiesel operator has been employed and all the vehicles now run on 100% biodiesel.
The recycling centre now run a waste vegetable oil collection service for catering establishments on Bute and in Tighnabruaich and Dunoon. Householders can also recycle their waste vegetable oil. Just put it in a bottle and put it out with your recycling. |
